The Proverbs 31 Woman Is A Boss

I know. You have heard references to the Proverbs 31 woman so many times that if anyone ever tries to use her again as “the standard”, you might just flip. I mean, why wouldn’t you? The misogynistic references that people often place on her back and that are used to confine women’s purpose to the home are irritating. I also sometimes get jealous of the existence of a woman so “perfect” that a whole chapter is dedicated to her worth. Who can realistically live up to that?

Yet, as of recent, I discovered a whole new Proverbs 31 woman. Blazing through the verses and inspiring anyone who comes into her path. She comes alive in the scripture, you just need to look a little closer. I discovered her whilst listening to an interview with Heather Lindsey (preacher). She spoke of how Proverbs 31 can be an inspiration for women looking to start their own business.

I discovered her whilst listening to an interview with Heather Lindsey (preacher). She spoke of how Proverbs 31 can be an inspiration for women looking to start their own business. The next day, I opened my Bible and read the chapter again. I read in between the lines and I found the Proverbs 31 woman perched on a pedestal in my mind. I realised that it was up to me to not bring her down but to bring myself up.

So I came to this conclusion. The Proverbs 31 woman lives in all of us. We just need to start seeing her as a source of inspiration, not intimidation. We need to stop painting her as a rigid criteria that we need to try to fit into and instead, use her as a compass to point us in the right direction.

In my attempt to do so, here is my interpretation of the Proverbs 31 Woman, The Ultimate BOSS:

One thing that I am trying to get comfortable with, is the idea that everything that I want to do is going to take WORK. And by accepting that, I would ideally like to enjoy what I am doing. So one of my goals at the moment is to delight in my work. Whether it is law school or my coding course at Twitter.

Finding joy in what you are invested in, even if it’s a small one, will make the work load feel a lot lighter! And this is what this woman exemplifies. She works HARD, willingly and she is all about getting her coin! She takes care of her finances. She doesn’t just wait for opportunities to arise, she “looks” for them.

She is SMART. She doesn’t invest foolishly. In fact, before making any commitments she thinks about the pros and cons of her decision. She is careful with her investments, which lead her to profit from them. She then reinvests the profits to increase their capital growth. I mean: GOALS.

I am naturally a very impulsive person. The minute I get an idea I have to make it come to reality and that’s why a lot of the times I don’t always make smart money decisions, but we will talk about that later…

So this verse is a reminder to me about the benefits of being patient and handling your finances wisely. I am currently working on this by attending as many personal finance talks as I can this year. So thank you Proverbs 31 for teaching me that I can’t grow any fruits if I keep scattering all of the seeds that I plant. Be prudent.

She gives back. She’s not only about increasing her own finances,  she cares about charity too. I am sure that she uses her skills to help others and I am also sure she probably runs a social enterprise somewhere… We can get so caught up in our goals to reach the top of whatever ladder that we are climbing, that we forget to bring the ladder back down. One thing that I’m learning is that it’s so important to always have a bigger reason for everything that you do.

Motivation fizzles when it is solely based on superficial desires. I try to ask myself: who I’m I trying to inspire? What do I have within myself that could potentially help someone else? Even just  “reaching out” to someone could have a big impact. In fact, a lot of times our impact is not immediately apparent. But never underestimate the fact that you have something that someone else “needs”.

Finally, all her hard work has led her to be known for her business acumen and she enjoys the benefits of it. She is not just known for her husband, she is known for her “own works”. Verse 31 is probably my favourite. The chapter begins by focussing on the Proverbs 31 woman in relation to her husband. But as it develops you realise that actually, the Proverbs 31 woman has her own thing going on! It’s her hard work that gains her praise, not just her husband’s.

So give it a read and see what you can find in between the lines. To me, the Proverbs 31 woman is a BOSS because she is smart, financially savy and kind. What does she mean to you?

I hope I have helped to change her from the dreaded chapter that we all want to avoid and…
